In client/server computing a server is a large, powerful central computer. Servers are shared by many users who access it through remote input/output devices (keyboard/monitor combinations) that allowed the user to work with the remote computer. These are called terminals.

Originally such terminals were hardware devices. With modern end-user PCs becoming more powerful in the 1980's, these dedicated hardware devices were replaced by software that runs on a PC and which simulates features of the original hardware terminals. Such programs is called a terminal-emulator (a software that emulates/simulates a terminal).

About SDI TN3270 Plus

TN3270 Plus was a Windows terminal emulator by SDI USA, Inc. for connecting PCs to IBM mainframes (zSeries), IBM i (AS/400), UNIX and other systems via TCP/IP. It supported TN3270 / TN3270E and TN5250 as well as common terminal types like VT100/VT220 and ANSI, and offered automation options such as scripting and interfaces like WinHLLAPI and DDE. It also included features such as file transfer options and secure connection methods like SSL/TLS and SSH.

On 9/26/2025, SDI USA announced that it has ceased all operations. They stated there will be no technical support, no future product updates, no new releases, and no new licenses, and recommended that users download installers and documentation before the website closes down. (See the notice on SDI's website: https://www.sdisw.com/)

If you rely on TN3270 Plus in production, this is a good time to transition to a modern and fully supported solution like ZOC Terminal.

ZOC Terminal as a TN3270 Plus Alternative

ZOC Terminal was started as a 32-bit application for OS/2 in 1995 and has been continuously developed ever since.

Over the years, ZOC has undergone many transitions. Offering a Windows implementation in 1999 was a step towards more popularity. Later, offering a macOS version of ZOC in 2010 was another major step for ZOC.

Unlike TN3270 Plus, whose vendor SDI USA ceased operations in 2025, ZOC Terminal has been and still is under continued development, and it remains in the hands of its original developers.

ZOC shares many features with TN3270 Plus, e.g. superb TN3270, TN5250, VT220 and VT-100 emulations, as well as an extensive scripting language, and of course SSH and telnet access to hosts.

But ZOC Terminal also offers modern features like tabbed sessions, a refined graphical user interface, secure shell connectivity and full support for modern operating systems like Windows 10/11 and macOS Tahoe.

In other words, if you are looking for a stable and fully supported replacement for TN3270 Plus, ZOC Terminal will offer an excellent alternative.
